1919: Oil Operator House
Oil Operator House

1919 | 1728 South Madison Avenue, Tulsa, Oklahoma | According to Footsteps Through Tulsa, this home was designed for an unnamed Tulsa oil operator. Completed in 1919 when the population of Tulsa had just topped 70,000 people, it is nestled on the same block of Maple Ridge as Goff’s earliest work, the Percy and Evaline Elliott House. Similar to other works by Bruce Goff at this time and owing to the likely influence of Wright’s work on his style, it features an asymmetrical stucco prairie style with high ceilings. The fascia band has an ornamental frieze of interlocking circles. Brick piers articulate the structural organization of the house, and are arranged in a musical rhythm along the north elevation. Similar to other homes in Goff’s oeuvre, Thomas Thixton confirmed this home as being an early design by Bruce Goff. A park nearby that no longer exists would have offered grand views from the hill of Tulsa’s downtown to the North for residents out for a stroll in the neighborhood.
