1918: Quaker Avenue House (McGregor House)
Quaker Avenue House (also known as The MacGregor House)

1918 | 1401 S. Quaker Avenue, Tulsa, Oklahoma | Tulsa was growing rapidly by 1918 and many residents began to build homes away from the bustle of downtown and the banks of the Arkansas River into the hills that lay east of the city. The McGregor House, built in 1918 is located just off what is now the dense Cherry Street business district but the neighborhood was definitively suburban at that time. Notably different from other homes on the block with distinctive horizontal eaves and wide overhangs, the history of the home and Bruce Goff’s design had been lost during several successive changes in ownership. Fortunately, one of Goff’s University of Oklahoma students, Tom Thixton drove Goff –who famously didn’t drive-- around Tulsa during a school-related trip in the early 1950s. Goff then confirmed that the McGregor House was his design. An affidavit from Thixton, who was also a longtime owner of the Goff-designed Adah Robinson home and studio, secured the home’s place on the National Register of Historic Places. Current owner Mark Sanders brought the house out of disrepair with significant restorations and renovations with vintage stock replacements.
